I have been to John Chow's blog a few times, and that "pop up" was a pain. It took me a few seconds to find the close button. I agree with your the premise you make in the beginning of your post. Pop-ups do belong on "sales type" websites, or any site that is designed for sales only. You don't want to see a pop-up every time you visit your favorite blog.
