Beach Body Coaches are Hardcore Marketers

Ever since I started P90X I have been approached by coaches to become a coach or a member of their team. I am contacted everyday by at least 1 coach. So I decided to talk to one coach and asked him how this system work. If you have seen my Facebook status or twitter, I was looking for a P90X offer.

The reason for this is because Beach Body does not have an affiliate program, well they do they just run their model totally different. Very similar to an MLM model. Also, the way they word their program is very similar to any affiliate program or even merchant.

In any case… I just want to ramble about Beach Body Marketers…

As everyone know I am trying to get back into shape, so I decided to do P90X. There is so much hype around it, ehh why not give it a try. Once doing the program I leaned up real quick, 1 week time. Anyways, this isn’t what I want to talk about. Beach Body Marketers are one hell of a marketer.

These people attack you like hungry MLM’rs do. They see my tweets about P90X or any type of exercise and then they ask if I want to be a coach. Now, I stated before I wanted to promote P90X but couldn’t go direct. They do not have an affiliate program, essentially they do but to only buyers.

I am goin to break this down to the best knowledge I have gathered from numerous Beach Body coaches…

This is how their system works. To join their  ‘affiliate’ system you have to pay $40 to join + some business fee. Then they show you a model which says there are 9 ways to join…

  1. Retail Profit
  2. Club Membership
  3. Pack Bonuses
  4. Pack Sponsor Bonuses
  5. Shakeology System
  6. Team Bonuses
  7. Matching Bonus
  8. Quarterly Bonus
  9. Business Centers

If you have done MLM before internet marketing… yes I am a victim… then this model looks fairly similar. But being a coach you earn 25% per order a member makes from your website (which is hosted on Beach Body).

Then one of the best benefits I as told is the fact people will continually buy from a club membership. Meaning they are rebilled and resent a protein bar case, basically they are refilling the users order of Shakeology drinks or nutrition they previously ordered.

Then it goes down into bonuses… honestly I lost it from there. But these coaches are hardcore marketers because they love what they do but are always selling. I was talking to one person and he would give me advice but the last sentence would be, why not be a coach or interested in becoming a coach.

I would say I don;t like dealing with people or I don’t have enough knowledge to coach someone into health. Then they go into something saying Beach Body takes care of that. In essence they are promoting their Beach Body link to me to sign up and buy directly from Beach Body.

I was also told the best part is the upselling and continuous purchases people make. Sure makes sense, continuity offers are always working plus people need to refill their protein shakes. So this downline buys from the upline and the upline makes money.

But I looked at it like this… what if I was able to almost do the same thing but with an auto responder for health fanatics. I send them a reminder once every 2 weeks or maybe even once a month to a website I recommend to purchase protein from. Easy continuous income.

Another thing I found weird is these coaches are growing Beach Body’s brand and not themselves as coaches. One issue I quickly found was because most of these people are not tech savy and do no understand what a domain is. They just do a lot of referral marketing to their link.

I would rather grow a brand about being a coach and grow myself as being knowledgeable in the field. I do not like branding for someone else too much unless it benefits me in the long run.

Since I created a website about my health and wellness and me doing P90X I have been getting bombarded with tweets and emails about how I shouldn’t give info on my blog and I should ‘coach’ someone. The reason I assume is because I can earn money, but the blog will earn money in the long run. I actually have a big game plan for it…

So what I learned from these Beach Body Coaches are that they are persistent and and very happy what they do. These people are willing to help everyone in the fitness world as well as being hard sellers. I have met many non hard sellers but would bring up the question about being a coach, while others are everyday attacking me.

Coaches are fun to talk to as most of them are women I have been talking to. The men are just hardcore sellers, looking in their best interests.

They are also hustlers with a different paying model, that just got too complicated for me. Anyways… like Tony Horton says… BRING IT!

A guy I work with has gotten into really great shape with p90x his wife became a ‘reseller’ on the side. I gotta say it is pretty impressive how her results have turned out http://www.teambeachbody.com/susandr . I have no idea what sort of payout they get for this but I have seen the P90x affiliate offers on some of the networks.

I am a big fan of p90x. It is lots of fun, but lately I have been wanting more or something a little different to mix it up. So I was checking out Insanity. In the process of learning about other Beach Body products, I saw the whole coaching thing.

It seems like there is several people working their own name and brand while promoting Beach Body. Seems like that is the best way to go.

i’ve used Insanity. its a great workout program. i ran track in college(pole vault and 400 hurdles) and its almost as tough as some of my sprint training was. its a great cardio program. i just moved back to hawaii. i grew up surfing here in big waves. the cardio power i got from doing insanity helped me take some big wave beat downs on some fairly large waves(15-20 foot faces). im talking about getting held down by 4 of these waves in a row. i highly recommend this program. it gets you in shape and helps you look better.

I bought and used insanity as well… it’s a great program and they market it SO WELL! Shawn T (the main instructor) is as motivating as they come, so it is definitely fair to say that any workout video instructor is in actuality a glorified marketer.

This is my 3rd try and going through P90X. I have made it 30days before. I’m going the full 90 this time as we are motivated.

Hey Ian, I totally feel your pain. My sister keeps bugging me to sign up as a coach under her but as a fellow IMer I don’t like the idea of being a slave to the Beachbody brand. Good luck!

I am thoroughly astounded at Anybody who finishes the P90x training program. I am on day 29 and I feel like I am making great improvement. The eating plan is the most tricky to stick 100% to. I am looking forward to being in the best shape of my life. BRING IT!

I had no idea P90X existed before about 20 seconds ago. You should do a post on your results. How much time does it realistically take?

    Hi Ian

Nice post. Figured I’d throw my $.02 in. I signed up as a coach a year ago only after doing two rounds of P90X. The discounts on products was enough for me. While continuing on with the workouts my friends, family, and co-workers approached me about my workout results. Fast forward a year now and I’m doing the Coaching full time. I actually just got back from a trip to Hawaii that I won from them.

    http://workoutjourney.com/day-5-top-beachbody-coach-trip-2010-kauai-hawaii

The coaching part is simple. All you do is answer questions about the workouts (which you should be doing anyways). I get what your saying about building a brand. However, I can’t think of a better brand right now than P90X and that’s just 1 of Beachbody’s workouts. Its not just about the workouts. Beachbody sells equipment and nutrition products too. Whatever customers you bring in are still yours. I use a autoresponder to stay in touch with my customers about new Beachbody workouts and nutrition products.

Its not just a internet thing. I wear my P90X T- Shirt when I go grocery shopping and people tell me they are doing it. I give them a biz card and they become my customer or a coach too. Its really that simple. Your really just spreading the message of health and fitness.

Anyways, I see your doing the workout. Keep it up.

    Thanks

thanks! ehh the coach system by beach body doesnt make sense to me. i have been approach by a lot of people and I even got sent a power point on it. I think the way I already promote online far exceeds what beach body has.

well you want to build YOUR brand not p90x, this way you can market yourself and take advantage of the users relationship later on.

yup the workout is great… I rather market it differently ;)

  • http://www.profitaddiction.com Profit Addiction

The bodyweight programs definitely look like a solid alternative to resistance training! I would much rather lift weights though :)

  • http://workoutjourney.com Brad

    @ Ian

I’ll simplify it. You earn a 25% commission on all orders and the chance to earn bonuses off of other people you sign up to be a Coach (the MLM side). I know some people who only do one or the other and do it full time. I do both as I want people trying the products.

I’m confused. I came to your site via Tiny Muscles and when looking at that site all you talk about is P90X. How are you building your own brand? Wouldn’t you have to be selling the Tiny Muscles workout with the Tiny Muscle nutrition products to be building your own brand?

It looks like you are building up the Beachbody brand instead. Even worse is when you make a sale through your banners for P90X, Beachbody keeps that customer name, not you. This is a loss of future commissions as if you were a coach that customer would be yours forever. How are you going to build a relationship with the people who buy through your site if you don’t have their name? I talk to mine all the time.

Maybe you could clarify these for me as it looks like you know more about this stuff then I do.

    Thanks

    Brad

  • http://www.ianfernando.com Ian

    @brad
I do promote p90x on there because I am doing it but I talk about my experience, I am not selling a tiny muscle workout – cause i dont have one. instead I promote p90x because I am using it. I am not growing beachbody because people come back to read about the supplements I take, the info about working out, difference about diets, supplements, combining p90x with weight training, etc. I do not talk about beachbody on there at all – so there is no branding for beachbody at all… but I recommend p90x because I use it… big difference.

i also capture lads via my site – did you download the p90x document? I captured a potential customer.

relationship is totally different from what you do and what I do online. You do phone calls or face to face (I assume). I create a presence, that is the relationship, people come back to the site that is the relationship, people interact with my social sites that is the relationship. I have a wider range of relationship because of presence.

the brand of tiny muscle is skinny to big experience, that is the brand. not beachbody

I can answer more for you, just drop me an email.

  • http://workoutjourney.com Brad

    @ Ian

Beachbody owns P90X. I don’t understand how you are not building the Beachbody brand.

I promote via the internet, face to face, FB, etc. I merely tell people what works for me and send them to Beachbody. They are the experts, not me.

I think I get what you are trying to say in that Tiny Muscles is your brand. This confuses me as you don’t have products of your own. I see it as you are promoting other peoples products on your site building their brand. Am I missing something?

    @ Jane

Beachbody does have a affiliate program. This whole post talks about the Coach program. Beachbody does have affiliate programs with CJ, Hydra, AZoogle, and more but you are throwing money away if you promote with those instead of as a coach. Beachbody actually gives Coaches the names of people who buy through CJ, Hydra campaigns. This means future $$ from the same customer. Read my site to learn more.

I actually love P90x and all of the Beachbody products. I have found that I can get fit and get paid at the same time. And its so easy to talk about P90X because 6 out of 10 people know about it or use it.

    Just my two cents..

dont get me wrong I like their products as well. a lot of people know about it because they have their infomercials everywhere. they spend their money on advertisements. plus I can get paid without joining their MLM program. I just never liked tiered payment programs

  • nette

I ordered TurboFire and it works. You also have the option whether to order it through them or just go directly to beachbody.com. i just googled turbofire and i made sure it is linked to beach body and it is secure for me to order, if you order it directly without a merchandiser or a coach they give you an option to order it with a 3 payment plan. This is what i did. Having a coach is just an option. These coaches would just want to pay it forward, and take advantage of earning money with the economy we have right now, they just have to try.

Hey Ian, I’m back again. :-) I wanted to put forth on the record that I’ve changed my mind and became a coach about 5 months ago. It’s too bad that you had such a negative experience with other MLM programs. It’s really not as bad as I thought! But in a way I’m kinda glad that you’re not a coach because I’m willing to bet your IM skills would probably knock the rest of us out of contention.

This post is exactly what I have been thinking about beach body coaching. Thank you so much for the post. I talk about Insanity all the time because I love it and I know that it works however I am constantly bombarded by coaches trying to get my business, trying to sign me up as a coach. It’s pretty annoying at times and it feels like everyone is a beach body coach. I’m sure there are a lot that work hard to get the sales and it probably works out well for them. It’s just something I have absolutely no interest in being a part of.
