Internet Marketers vs Affiliate Marketers

Marketing online basically means making money on the internet. Then it dives into multi categories such as internet marketers, email marketers, affiliate marketers, JV marketers, social marketers, info marketers, etc. This list can go on forever. The problem is these marketers or ‘gurus’ in the info marketing space or internet marketing space are a lot of trash.

Affiliate marketers in my opinion are one of the better breed of marketers because we are always interested about more volume and conversions. While most of the internet marketers out there are about JVing with big guys and gathering affiliates. Notice gathering affiliates, because we know where to find traffic.

While internet marketers are probably about SEO and ranking and creating an ebook. Most affiliates are finding more traffic sources and tweaking to its max. Now I am an internet marketer myself, I have created products and info products in the past. It was my way of getting into affiliate marketing.

But… I was always curious on where to get more traffic. I wasn’t interested in trying to build a bond for a month in order to get on someone’s list and then have my product or offer promoted JUST to a list. This is limiting a lot of traffic sources out there.

I posted on twitter about how the internet marketers are way behind affiliates marketers. I got a lot of response about this. The reason why I said this is because of Ryan Deiss new info product called Facebook Ad Power. He stated he has been doing it for a couple months and is far better than Google. I agree, it is better than Google. But there are other metrics that Facebook has which Google or any search tier is better at.

But a couple months and creating an info product? I have been using Facebook for traffic since Facebook Marketplace and then they released Facebook Flyers. So I have been on it for quite sometimes. Search the blog I have case studies about when I was on Facebook Flyers. Even checkout my first Facebook Info Product when Facebook Market Place was out! (outdated)

One response I got from a popular info marketer stated… ‘most of the ‘gurus’ actually study CPA marketers’

Now that statement in itself is crazy! Internet marketers admit they are a little behind the times when it comes to traffic. CPA/affiliate marketers are better at traffic generation than anyone else.

This info marketer knows his stuff and even admits when facts are put in front of him. He too does clickbank promotion and is always interested in new traffic sources, even though Facebook is pretty old and new at the same time.

The biggest problem I find in the internet marketing world is they are more all about JVs and exchanging their lists to grow each others or get that quick income from the email blast. Which is cool because the list is concentrated enough that majority of users are buyers.

But then what happens? The info product dies out after a month. The hype is dead. Controversies are on the internet. The buzz is gone. With that information 98% of the buyers didn’t do a thing about it.

I have my own info products and I have my own services on the internet. As an internet marketer/affiliate marketer we know how to test multiple parts of a website, landing page, where to find the right traffic, understanding the demographics of the traffic source, etc.

The biggest problem with the info marketers and JV marketers is they create such a buzz and hype everyone is buying the info product and doing a small scale test. It then shows me that no one is asking the important question when it comes to marketing online….

“Where can I get traffic?”

Obviously there are many variations of this questions. But it is very simple. When I first started I kept asking myself where can I find traffic. How did this person advertise on ESPN. Where is this banner being hosted. etc. There are just multiple questions out there to be asking on how to find traffic sources.

The problem with internet marketers is they do not know how to expand outside the realm of what they know. They are scared or stuck. Which is again why I think affiliate marketers are the better breed of marketers because we tend to spend 5k to see if the traffic is viable as a test. We try to conquer the traffic because every traffic source has a different type of demographic.

Again I am an internet marketer, info marketer, and affiliate. I meshed these experiences to give me the knowledge I need to test offers or create a product. It is affiliate marketing that makes me who I am and how I market almost anything.

BTW… heard Facebook Ad Power isn’t even all that… which brings the question…. should I make one…

ryan deiss has been doing lead generation/ppc/paid traffic since like 1998. the only reason why he released a facebook product is because he knew that there was a lack of information in the “newb internet marketers” marketplace. he’s just exploiting a void in the market, and profiting pretty well from it. it’s not a case of him doing something for 5 months and trying to teach people about it – he knows what hes doing.

you just have to remember that his audience is generally newbies – he’s not going to sell super advanced stuff, because no one would buy it. he’s a pretty good marketer if you pay attention to how he positions his products, etc. do as he does, not as he says.

with the ryan deiss love aside, there is a lot of garbage in the internet marketing space. a lot of fakers, a lot of bullshit guru info products. but it’s not ALL bad. there are some guys that do care about their customers – though unfortunately it’s something that is relatively rare.

and lastly – who cares who is “better” or not? as long as you are doing what you love – that’s all that matters. some guys just like the product/jv approach – if it’s easy and works, why switch?

anyway, not trying to attack you – just giving my 2 cents

the load time for this page is longgg :(

Why you divide internet marketer and affiliate maketer?
doesn’t the affiliate marketer is a part of internet marketing (selling something/anything and find the market on internet?)
but from your article i can get the points

Affiliate Marketers continue to chase niches and try to find what is hot in the market. They never have to interact with the client but can be very successful.

Internet Marketers have a product and need to stand behind it as well as interact with clients to make sales.

Both can be very lucrative and will be endless discussion, but as long as the product is good and give the benefits for the buyer, i think is ok. but personally i choose as affiliate marketing. :)

I haven’t seen Ryan Deiss’s new product, but I think “david” above is right – he’s exploiting a gap in the market segment of “internet marketers”.

That being said, I agree with a lot of your comments regarding the non-stop internet marketing “incest” of scratching each other’s back, cross-promoting every new product launch, and rehashing and reteaching “how to make money….” information. One thing is for sure, I am rapidly unsubscribing myself from many email lists each month based on who simply sends the latest product promos.

This is why it’s important to choose your mentors/teachers carefully. It’s easy for newbies to follow newbies who are following amateurs who are following amateurs…and somewhere up that chain are the real/true marketers who’s info gets sliced & diced into different iterations of infoproducts.

There is good and bad in all corners of the Internet/Affiliate marketing world – some who add value and some who don’t, some who are sincere/genuine and some who aren’t, some who care about their lists/customers and some who see them as simply a $metric.

Hope to meet you at the next affiliate summit.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always interpreted the term “internet marketer” as simply a broader term, where “affiliate marketer” was a subset of that.

The way I see it, anyone doing affiliate marketing online are also by definition internet marketers. As internet marketers, we all drive web traffic to products or services one way or another.

Some internet marketers promote other people’s products (as affiliates), some promote their own products directly, and some help others by offering their online marketing skills to businesses through consulting, etc.

  • http://trafficultimatums.com/ traffic ultimatum

I agree that if you sell some thing online that you are a internet marketer, (maybe not ebay, but in some cases). The only difference I see is that im marketers create more digital products to sell and affiliates sell digital and more physical products for the big brands.

Quite an interesting comparision between the two. I must say I never really thought about it in these ways but you definitely made some good points there. I too have always found myself leaning more towards affliate marketers as being the better bunch.

    Till then,

Affiliate Marketing is when a merchant, or seller, pays people like us to bring people to there site and buy there product. When the people buy the product, we get a cut, or percentage. Often the cut can be anywhere from 1% to 90%!

    Ian,
I’d say the Market’s about ripe for some advanced FB info. Deiss & Shoe & a few others have opened the doors wide enough, so you could probably kill it with an elite product. Maybe position it AdwordsBlackBook style. All bad-ass & gangsta.

Addressing your point though, not all IM’ers are gurus selling to IM newbs. You’ve got guys like Mike Geary & Bob Parsons & many many others who know how to burn a server down with traffic even without an affiliate base.

Didn’t realize that there are that many “marketers”. I thought internet marketers are way different than “affiliate marketers”. You mentioned internet marketers are more into seo. I agree. But I didn’t think they were categorized in the main category of affiliate marketers. Aren’t affiliate marketers the ones who merely promote directly, constantly, daily to their audience while “internet marketers” are the actual bloggers? The ones who are more residual, more organic?
    It’s confusing.
