So my friend Andrew Commander wrote a blog post about how to “steal” a bike. In searching for funny images, he searched on “bike thief” and here’s what he got:

Notice what Google has suggested. Further, click on their suggestion and get this…

Worse, Google Suggest is filling your mind with unholy thoughts. Type in “nigg” and get this…

I might just be searching for the definition of niggardly– which means petty or reluctant to spend– a completely legitimate, non-racist search. But in the case of “bike thief”, Google is actively recruiting me to be a racist, even though it’s some algorithm that notices these particular terms go together. In the same way, if you look at Planet of the Apes on Walmart.com, it suggests Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream”.

Perhaps that’s collaborative filtering gone wrong, where the system tells you what items go together based on what real people are doing– no moral judgment involved, just matching user activity streams.

This is even true with PPC, where advertiser load up a bunch of keywords (called dictionary uploading) and just plug people into search.

At conferences, my old fallback was to do a Google search on “used condoms” and “nuclear weapons”– and up pops an ebay ad– “Looking for Used Condoms? Bid on Used Condoms now! Find great deals & huge selection”

In the same way that Google’s algorithms will just match user data together, PPC advertisers will just upload every word in the dictionary and bid on it– never mind how silly it looks when you apply Dynamic KeyWord Insertion into ad copy. By the way, ebay has removed a lot of my favorite demonstration searches, but “used underwear” still works. And if you search on “used condoms”, you will still see ads from local.com and RefurbDepot.com– can’t imagine what they would have to offer. They should have “used” as a negative keyword, but that’s another post on PPC tactics.

So is it really wrong if the system gives you back what you’re most likely, statistically, to want to see? After all, you can’t blame the mirror if you don’t like what you see in the reflection.

A guest blog post by Dennis Yu, CEO of BlitzLocal, specializing in local Internet marketing.

A few months ago, I wrote a parable about how to make more money in less time by scaling yourself from a consulting business to a software business. The parable took the form of a guy who moved rocks by hand in the quarry and how he learned to use tools, trained others to use tools, and eventually implemented a system where thousands of folks learned to move rocks more efficiently. This “rock star” became quite wealthy.

I thought it was a good article…. until I looked at Google Analytics and saw the bounce rate was nearly 100% on this page.

Turns out that Google ranks that post for searches for “best tool to move rocks”, “how to get experience driving a bulldozer”, “tools to move rocks”, “what is the hourly rate for bulldozers”, and so forth. Looks like my attempt to be clever backfired, as Google took it literally.

When you are an affiliate, you will start getting your name out there and then more and more networks want you to run traffic with them. Now, when I first started I was with 2 networks. Now I am part of almost every affiliate network out there. Now I have a lot of options and more open sources to multiple offers.

When you join a network their main pitch is they can give you the highest payout, really? Well some networks can definitely provide you with the highest payouts, but that is every networks pitch. Wouldn’t it be easier if you can compare side by side all the networks and compare that specific offer, then see who has the highest payouts right away?

Some networks only allow an immediate bump if you are known in the industry or if you have been doing decent volume with the network. Well sometimes you do not have to go through that specific hassle, just do a side by side comparison of the offer across all the networks. How?

I insisted they owed me a podcast or interview, because I remember when John Chow had his update – I attacked them for an interview. I can imagine their business jumped because of that first design, so I wanted to get their reaction right away.

They have done a lot of blogs such as the famous ShoeMoney and John Chow. They add a unique twists to their designs, it isn’t just color is web 2.0 color. Their styles definitely jump out and they know what they are doing. I learned quite a bit from them knowing Josh is a consultant and finds out what the blogger wants and how Unique Blog Designs can better optimize their blog. It was interesting to hear also they are going into the premium style web designs as well. I highly favorite my friend Brian Gardner’s Revolution Theme and we even go into discussion about his themes.

They have created a great brand among their team and it is funny all three of them are friends. I know when I try to partner up wit my friends, it was hard – but UBD definitely has their head straight. Though we are all about the same age – around our 30’s – we still hanged out and had fun. I met up with them at IZEAFest and once more at Blog World Expo where they had a huge booth. I met up with them in the night life as well, just ballin as Jim Jones would say.

Before they left, like i said I was able to grab them and just have a great conversation about their company and how they differentiate themselves from other blog designers and premium template designs.

After having so much fun in Miami and meeting up with some of my readers, I flew out to Vegas to go to Blog World Expo. Blog World Expo is meant for bloggers and social marketers. This is the second event and I want to thank ShoeMoney and John Chow for letting me know how powerful the convention is. I already met up with Guy Kawasaki and many other users.

Well I arrived last night at about 5pm and I am looking forward to tonight. I have been invited to an Affiliate Dinner tonight, then the TechSet Party and then the Tweet gathering. Then tomorrow I am invited to a Super Blogger Dinner hosted by Market Leverage. Sunday I am relaxing! Ever since IZEAFest, I have been meeting a lot of new people. Also I have been partying a lot! Gosh!

Back to Blog World Expo

So far I have been tweeting pictures and statements via twitter. So follow me and you can see what I am tweeting about. Everyone here at Blog World talks about Twitter! I came to the event a little early and went to the B5 Media session and listened to a lot of B5 Media speakers. Even listening to Darren speak about top sources for traffic, I wrote some things down (well type it in my mac).

Well here are some pictures via my iPhone which I tweeted. Actual pictures will be uploaded once I get home on Monday.

So there will be more photos happening. I even have some videos ready but will be uploaded once I get home. If you already do not know blog World Expo is:

The first and only industry-wide tradeshow, conference, and media event dedicated to promoting the dynamic industry of blogging and new media. In addition to the only industry-wide exhibition, BlogWorld features the largest blogging conference in the world including more than 50 seminars, panel discussions and keynotes from iconic personalities on the leading-edge of online technology and internet-savvy business.

I was not going to attend BWE but peer pressure is a bitch. A lot of people were telling me about it and how it is one of the bigger blogging and social marketing conference. I even met up with Ted Murphy, I just seen him at IZEAFest! I also look forward to meeting some people as well such as Joe Tech, I know I will be meeting more people at the Tech Set Party – I want to thank Stephanie from Internet Geek Girl for the invite. I know tomorrow will be a bigger day! I know more bloggers are coming later tonight and even some cpa networks will be arriving later today. Officially Blog World does not start until tomorrow. I hope to see more people tomorrow and speak to some of my readers.

For right now I am going to watch some TV and get back to Blog World Expo, luckily I can take the monorail because walking in this heat can be a pain. I think I lost some weight from all the walking at IZEAFest, Miami, Orlando, and now Vegas! Well time to rest watching some Law and Order then off to see Gary Vaynerchuk

I finally decided I am attending Blog World Expo. I was wondering if I should just go to either IZEAFest or BlogWorld Expo. IZEAFest I quickly bought my ticket because of an unbeatable price and I just finally decided to go ahead and go to Blog World. Shoemoney was telling me how crazy it is at Blog World and I decided to look at the scheduled sessions. There are a lot of interesting people I would like to meet and listen from. I mean it makes sense for me to go since I am a blogger as well. I talked about going to IZEAFest prior and how it is almost in direct competition with Blog World a week later.

IZEAfest is a social marketing conference similar to Blog World Expo, but it is far cheaper. I know it will be fairly hot and I decided to go to Orlando because one of my cousins live in Orlando and I haven’t seen them in such a long time, so I want to drop in and say hi.

But anyways, I think Blog World will be of great benefit since big speakers such as John Chow, Zac Johnson, Darren Rowse, Brian Clark, Steve Hall, Timothy Ferris, and so many more will be attending and speaking. I know some of them and met others in person and would like to expand my knowledge in the blog and social marketing area. Since I blog I guess it would be a good choice for me to join such a convention.

Today, it was kinda of hectic for me to book my flights and hotels. I was stuck in either flying out to Orlando then coming back to Jersey, then flying out to Las Vegas and then back to Jersey. I didn’t want to waste that one week gap and just come back to jersey, I decided to stay in Florida and then fly out to Las Vegas. This makes the most sense to me. Fly to Orlando, hang out then to Vegas then back to Jersey. Also, I know some affiliates down in Florida so I ended calling them up to hang out and chill.

Sam from Affiliates Miami will be meeting me up at IZEAFest and then we will be driving down to Miami to chill and hang out. From there we will be flying out to Vegas for Blog World Expo. It is interesting that we are going to a social marketing event because we have been working on a VIP Bloggers Forum and this would be good exposure for the forum. As it is meant to attract A listers to participate with smaller bloggers. Big Ups to Sam since he has been going hard with this. I only provided the idea and he has been creating and designing the forum.

Another one of my good friends, Jani form the UK will be meeting me at IZEAfest as well. He will be in Orlando much earlier and I will be in contact. He will also be with us traveling to Miami and we will be working on a digital product together. So I will be in Miami for the week I will be working on my campaigns and other projects from the ‘Miami’ office. During the night life it should be whats up since I like to ‘ball out’.

If yu want to meet up leave a comment or twitter me and we will definitely meetup. I enjoy meeting up with a lot of my readers. So leave a comment or follow me on twitter.

Bloggers beware, I have a blogger who’s personality brings a smile to friends and people around her. As we know a blog needs a personality kick, I have or been trying to add some interesting personal experiences on this blog – outside of internet marketing. Monica recently just started a blog and already she is being recognized on the blogosphere. Recently Monica Durazo was the host of Top Affiliate Challenge host and she did a great job at it. There were times within the first couple days it was hard because of criticism of the show. Later on she stayed strong and started to network with everyone at the show.

Entering as a total noob to the internet and internet marketing, Monica started to realize there is potential on the internet. Everyone was telling her to start a blog, since she already does it on her myspace page. Wes Wyatt has helped her register her own domain and John Chow helped her setup her full blog! Everyone was giving her tips and tricks about the internet and even how to benefit from the internet.

Jeremy even had her model for his Fighters.com website. Monica learned a lot from the show and though she was going through rough times while at the show, every contestant made sure she was feeling home. Her personality showed very quickly and almost felt like we all were best of friends.

For today’s podcast, I had the opportunity to talk to Monica for a little bit about her success with her new blog. Her blog has received an enormous traffic from other blogs and just the internet in general. She is getting traffic that other beginner bloggers are trying to get after several months while Monica received it within days of launch of her blog.

Though her blog is very different from a lot of blogs out there, hers is very personal. She talks about her daughter and even does video blogging on her blog! It is amazing how a newbie is doing video blogging because she realizes the potential of video, while others out there are stuck under a rock about vlogging.

Monica jump started her internet stardom right near the end of Top Affiliate Challenge, we all helped her with her blog and she appreciated all of our help. It is a great time to talk to her about her blog and about her experience on the show.

This was a good podcast because I wanted to show everyone out there that it is possible to get traffic and good traffic as long as you do networking. This discussions proves you can make it on the internet and your blog does not have to make money, it can be for personal growth as Monica has stated. I believe this is a great podcast for beginners on the internet when creating a blog because it proves you can have a successful launch within days of releasing your own website or blog.

Last night was the premiere of Hell’s Kitchen, great show! Gordon Ramsey has opened up a new restaurant in LA called London LA. He has London NY in obviously New York. This was the premiere and let me tell you it was a great first episode. But there were a couple things that stuck out to me which describes what I am currently doing, blogging. Nearing the end of the show there were some statements made that relates to any part of life and I will be relating it to blogging.

Dedication and Passion are the 2 attributes which was seen on the show and stated. For examples it was the guys vs the girls and the girls gave it their all – showing they want to be the next executive chef of London LA. They stood up all night remembering the menu while the guys slept on it.

Obviously, the men were not as hungry as the women were – they didn’t know a single item on the menu. This can tie into passion since dedication is wants your wants. If you are not passionate about something then you will not dedicate yourself to the goal. If you remember Israel spoke about passion via podcast. Passion gives you the motivation you need to accomplish what you want.

Dedication plus Passion gives you the ‘push’ to get your act together and do what is needed to win! Everyone loves to win and no one wants to be a loser. The girls on Hell’s Kitchen showed the desire and passion – they all loved cooking. Because of their passion and dedication they beat the men – but no one was able to serve entrees.

The fact the men did not have the dedication to help each other or passion to even do the cooking they enjoy was not able to cope with the women. Though there was a lot of mis communication among teams this shows they were not dedicated to themselves to try to manage each other and as a person to help.

Why being Passionate about what you do is important:

You will not see your objective as work more as an enjoyment or play

You look forward to do what is needed to complete your goal

You do not complain about the objectives at hand

You easily maneuver to tasks and objectives

You enjoyably research task and objectives that comes your way

Why being Dedicate about what you do is important:

You put all your energy to complete a task

You push yourself more to have it completed

You do not let other distraction remove you from your goals

You research heavily to conquer your goals and objectives

Passion and Dedication combine can produce a person which has the best attribute to accomplishing their goals. You can not have one and be successful because dedication needs passion. Just having dedication will ‘force’ you to like what you are doing, like a job. Passion alone can not be by itself because you will not be able to accomplish goals. Being ‘passionate’ about something and is different from being ‘passionate.’ Having both can turn a person into a new person and help accomplish their objectives faster than a person that does not have any of these.

The other day Mark posted a tweet, yes I am a twitter whore, about bloggers talking about how video blogging is the next big thing and these authors do not have a single video on their blog. I am one of those readers that do not like to read all the time, I would rather grab a podcast or listen to video. Now a days we are in a system of fast pace moving environment. We want the necessary information now!

So upset about the fact how bloggers are talking about video blogging and how beneficial it is, yet no videos on their blog. This is like creating a digital product, promoting it, and not even using your own product! If you are going to talk about something make sure you can back it up. Do not go and portray yourself as the super expert because you will look like a super ass. There is a lot of fakeness on the internet, especially those who want to make money online.

There are marketers that just want to get content and will write anything that will attract the end user. With blogging you can not do that, specifically because blogging is viewed as an opinionated resource. So many people look to blogs for news because it is peoples’ opinions, which sometimes has a stronger point of view than CNN itself.

Back on topic…

Video blogs is a great way to interact with your reader base. You can show emotions and feelings. With writing you can just fake the feelings and emotions. With video you are basically putting yourself out there, you are you and really you can’t change that. It is you the blogger that is making yourself more unique than others out there. Having one video is a step ahead of everyone else.

What will people think of me? I am a little camera shy.

So was I when I first started video blogging, my first time on camera, I was a little nervous and I didn’t know the ropes. I have read about several cameras and what is needed to do proper video editing, more importantly I am now more comfortable in front of a camera. Being who Ian Fernando is, I am always comfortable in front of a camera. I like having my pictures taken and seeing my self on TV. If I look like an idiot then you must be confusing me with somebody else. =P

The best way to get rid of camera shyness is to video blog yourself everyday. Do not post it on youtube or any other services first. Get comfortable in front of a camera – talk what is on your mind. Soon you will start getting into video blogging and want to talk more into a camera. Once you are happy and being yourself you are ready for YouTube viewers.

Just doing something repeatedly get you more comfortable doing it over and over again. I started with a webcam with poor audio and upgraded to a camera with good audio. I also started being more interactive with the camera, where as before I was just talking. So many things will change and you will notice yourself change once you do video blogging repeatedly. But for me I do not do any sort of video blogging at all…

I only joined because the ‘crowd’ is doing it. I have blogged about micro blogging in the past. I have talked about Pownce and Twitter in the past and how it is a way to speak in a small and quick way. I really never went into detail about it because I rarely used it. Recently I have used it and I found it to be a very powerful way to network.

At affiliate Summit West I was able to keep on top of shows, people, groups and people even going to lunch. I was able to even network faster and keep in contact faster than a simple text (SMS). I have decided to use it after Mark from 45n5 spoke about it on his blog. It was a good way for me to follow my favorite bloggers and entrepreneurs.

I also noticed every 15 minutes a group twit is delayed by 15 minutes. So I would send my twit 14 minutes before it would actually be twitted publicly in a group. This was done at the Affiliate Summit Social Networking Seminar. Since they had the their twitter page on a big screen, surely enough my twit came up. – lol

Back on Topic…

I remember having a twittering account and I rarely used it and I decided to go ahead and re use it. I had to get use to the system again, fairly easy once you get use to it. After following some people I started to twitter about the summit and found users replying to me! I have gained new friends that I have met at Affiliate Summit and I can easily get in contact with them without any text message charges.

Twitter is a form of communication similar to text messaging. You can send an ‘instant message’ to users, let them know what you are doing, talk to them as if you were sending a text message. I really can not think of a better example because twittering is text messaging on the internet.

Recently Shoemoney is ‘digging’ the concept of twittering while on his trip to SMX:

Right now I feel as if Twitter is a nice in-between of a blog and a instant messenger client.

Instant messenger client is also a good comparison; you are technically talking to a all of twitter or a specific person. The difference is twitter is public and you can publicly see what others are twittering. For example I have my twitter on my front page:

As you can see I am currently talking to Shoemoney and John Hasson. We exchanged information and update each other on topics. But twitter is all about communication, keeping in touch, and speaking your mind. I actually enjoy twittering because I can twit on messenger and it updates the twitter system. I can update via SMS and it updates.

Twitter provided me good contacts with so many people from Affiliate Summit West. I was able to meet new people simply just saying “at affiliate summit in my room, bored” – 2 minutes later I would get “meet group at lobby.” A group of other ASW member are also hanging out and were bored and decided to just hang out at the bars. This form of group communication by ‘text messaging’ proves to be a real valuable asset to a lot of marketers. It is very social as more and more people rather send a text message than actually call a person. I also find this a cheaper way to keep in contact with the people I have met at Affiliate Summit West.

This is a form of micro blogging and proves to be real beneficial and ‘twittering’ or ‘tweeting’ will stay here for a while.
