Pownce on a Review

By Ian Fernando

I recently joined Pownce, thanks for the invite Kevin! Again, dissecting in to the world of web 2.0 communication on the internet is crucial for everyone. Information is the key to our knowledge the more we know the better we feel.

What is Pownce?

Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You'll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast.

It is an advancement of twitter. A form of communication and sharing. This sounds very poor idea because we have AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, etc. Pownce is more of a sharing social network. Sharing ideas publicly. Think of it as a MySpace Bulletin. Ehh?

You might get annoyed by all the messages you receive in one day, but I believe Pownce only allow 25 messages a day, which is good to a certain extent I guess.

Another item that I find troublesome is the addition of friends. I felt like I could only add friends that were of others. There really is no way of adding friends unless you visit your friends Pownce page or just hit the Add friends link. The add friends link will list randomly (I believe) several friends from any of your friends, which you can just easily add. This might be very good for spammers, since they do not have to search for friends. Just add a new friend and add their friends and add their friends and their friends.

How can Pownce be useful?

You can share up to 10Mb files to just one person or publicly. Its a good way to share maybe an ebook or an mp3.

Well I will be using Pownce to share ideas and read what others have to say. It did not attract me when I first signed up. Then I thought of an idea and I decided to test it out and see how it works (currently in test mode). Users can share files to everyone publicly and even links, its a good way to have your website get some exposure.

Though I have already seen some spam on there, which I think might be some of annoyance but lets see how Pownce will deal with it. I really do not think this will really hit off on the internet, it is different in a sense but not too much to drift away from other social networking sites, or even IM.

Jon Philips can agree on this issue as well:

I don’t think Pownce innovates a lot, and it probably won’t be revolutionary. I feel it won’t change social networking like Digg did, but still it’s worth trying it out.

I do like some things about it, the layout and color very simple! I especially like the desktop program. I do not have to log into Pownce.com all the time, just boot my program and it will show all my messages that was received! I can even post messages right from it as well. Its very simple to use once installed.
